Sixty people have been found in the Sherwood Cemetery. A study of those buried, showed that twenty-five were members of the Solomon Sherwood Family. Most of the remainder were neighbors or friends.

Gilbert Horton, son of David Horton, was accidentally shot while hunting on October 31, 1826. He was the first burial in the cemetery. By 1850 this little cemetery next to the Sherwood home had ten (recorded) burials.

Solomon Sherwood and his wife, Mary Horton Sherwood, two of their children and their wives, ten grandchildren, and four great grandchildren were accounted for in this piece of ground. Solomon's second wife, Elona, was buried there. Other family members included the wives of two grandchildren, and the brother and sister-in-law of Mary(Polly) Horton.

This little cemetery, next to the Sherwood home, was used just over one hundred years when in 1929, ninety year old Sarah Jane Peck, wife of Solomon's grandson, David E. Peck, became the last known burial there.

From that time until the present the gates have been opened for visitors.

I am doing research on the John and Lovisa Burtis Sherwood Family. Three of their sons, John, Solomon, and Jabez lived in Mount Pleasant Township. Their two sisters, Betsey Sherwood Allen, and Sarah Sherwood Cramer are buried in Sullivan County New York.
