I have researched my ancestry for 50 years. The surnames in my direct lineage include Parker, Currence, Legg, Mooney, Wilbanks, Thomas, Holbrook, Thayer, Wright, Rooker, McCallum, Hawkins, Maret, Isbell, Keese, Strain, Bandy, Cleckler, Goodson, Whisenant, Head, and Suggs.
Having grown up in Rome, GA, I attended the Rome City Schools and graduated from West Rome High School in 1961. I attended Shorter College and graduated in 1965 with a B. A. degree, major in Biology. Upon attending graduate school at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, I received the Ph. D. degree in 1971 with a specialty in Zoology. After post-doctoral studies in Medical Parasitolgy and an instructor's position at the Medical College of Virginia (Microbiology Dept.), I taught biology at Guilford College in Greensboro, NC for a few years before going to North Georgia College and State University (now University of North Georgia).
I am a retired university Professor having taught courses in Human Anatomy & Physiology, Medical Microbiology, Human Histology, Medical Parasitology, and Wildlife Biology. I retired in 2005 from North Georgia College and State University after 37 years of teaching at the college / university level.
I have membership with the Sons of Confederate Veterans, National Society Sons of the American Revolution, Society of Indian Wars of the United States, Descendants of Washington's Army at Valley Forge, and the General Society of Colonial Wars. To date I have 12 Revolutionary War Patriot Ancestors that have been certified by the National Society Sons of the American Revolution: Corp. Joel Legg, Pvt. John Currence, Pvt. Micajah Mobley, Pvt. Bolling Wright, Pvt. John Rooker, Lt. William Patrick, Capt. Benjamin Head, Andrew Strain, Pvt. Aaron Legg, Capt. Pendleton Isbell, Sr., John Nicholas Whisenant, Sr., and Pvt. Solomon Wright.
I have recently finished compiling a second edition to my book: "The Strain Family: A Genealogy of the Descendants of Andrew Strain, Sr. of North Carolina" which was originally published in 1985. For a number of years I have been the Historian for the Strain Family Association which meets annually on the third Sunday in July at the Sugar Valley Baptist Church, Sugar Valley, Georgia. The book has been a monster of a project. It consists of 2 volumes and 1,712 pages, with a Name Index of more than 12,500 names.
