Using the 8870 Formula for Determining Birth Dates
Use this formula when the tombstone lists No Date of Birth, but does list the
Date that a person Died, and their Age.

Say July 12, 1870 and the person was 68 yr, 9mo, 25 days old.
In order to arrive at the birth date, one has only to use the 8870 formula to quickly get the date of birth rather than taking time to count backward.

The 8870 formula using the above date and age as an example:
Date of death - 1870 July 12 = 1870|07|12 (where 1870=year, 07=month, 12=day)
Age at death - 68 yrs 9 mo 25 days = 68|09|25 (where 68=years, 09=months, 25=days)
Subtract 68|09|25 from 1870|07|12 = 1801|97|87
Subtract the Constant (8870) from 1801|97|87
Result = 1801|09|17 (where 1801 = year, 09 = month, 17 = day.
This person was born 17 Sep 1817)

Problem with days converted:
1829|01|21 Died January 21, 1829
– 46|11|08 Age 46 years, 11 months, 8 days
1782|90|13
– 88 70 Subtract constant formula of 8870
1782|01|43 Person was born January 43, 1782
30 Subtract 1 month of 30 days from 43; add 1 month to January
1782|02|13

Proper birth date would be February 13, 1782

Problem with month converted:
1910|05|13 Died May 13, 1910
– 50|02|16 Age 50 years, 2 months, 16 days
1860|02|97
– 88 70 Subtract constant formula of 8870
1859|14|27 Person was born the 14th month, 27th day, 1859
12|00 Since there are only 12 months in a year, subtract 12 from 14;
add one year to 1859

1860|02|27
Proper birth date would be February 27, 1860
