Bio

I was born and raised in Chicago Illinois, the son of Eskil and Adele (Lawnicki) Newman. While maintaining a winter home in Gold Canyon, Arizona, I’ve spent many vacations and summers of my retirement years in the Ashland, Wisconsin area where my grandfather, Erick, and grandmother, Anna (Stone) settled after emigrating from Finland. My father was born in Ashland in 1909. I love the waters of Lake Superior and have sailed among the Apostle Islands many years.

I served in the U. S. Army, August 1958 to August 1961, and was a member of the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, where I was also a member of the Special Warfare Center Skydiving Club.

I married Christine Jaronski in September 1962 and she bore me three great sons, Paul, Scott and Ronald. All are married to outstanding girls and we have nine wonderful grandchildren.

After graduating from the University of Illinois I was an auditor for Price Waterhouse and a controller for ECM Corporation, Nachman Corporation and P&S Management, before retiring as Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Underwriters Laboratories, Inc. after eighteen years with that safety testing company. I also taught a financial accounting course as an adjunct professor at the Lake Forest Graduate School of Management and served on the Board of Trustees of the Village of Kildeer, Illinois.

After my retirement I established a publishing company, Silver Millennium Publications, Inc., and authored approximately twenty books, including several about the Apostle Islands and the Great Lakes—"Discovering the Apostle Islands”, “Sailing Adventures in the Apostle Islands”, “The Apostle Islands--America’s Wilderness in the Water”. “Travel Guide to Wisconsin’s Northern Shore” and “Tales of a Nautical Novice—Lessons I Learned Boating in the Great Lakes.” I have also published books by other authors.
