When I retired in 2007, I got hooked on Genealogy! I found so much wonderful information on Find-A-Grave website. Then I found many of my husband's family were not listed at their cemeteries. That's when I became a volunteer & started adding memorials myself.

Please send me any corrections that you see need to be made!

I don't know a whole lot. The people who are now buried in the mass grave were originally buried in the first Prescott County Indigent cemetery that was located somewhere near present day Prescott High School. These were people who died without known family or the means to be buried in a traditional cemetery. So they were buried at the cost of the county. The first cemetery operated from about 1915 until 1961 when work was being completed on the high school. That's when they were all disinterred and buried in the mass grave at the present day indigent cemetery. I'm slowly adding their names to the present day cemetery as I come across them in the death certificates. That's about all I know. Sorry it isn't more.

Asa Pennington
Deena, I'm also a descendant of Asa Pennington through son William Carroll and would really like to know who Asa's parents are. I saw the conflicting info on his memorial back in 2012 and I emailed Yerva, asking for her sources. If you are interested in her response, please email me at and I'll send it to you. It is too long to put on here. Which child are you descended from?

I will try to get back over to the cemetery and see if I can get a better photo and maybe get the dates on it. Since it is broken I cannot lift it. I am new at this so I need to study up on trying to clean without harming the headstone.

Asa Pennington
I wish you much success in your research. You may yet find a compelling record to add weight to Timothy being Asa's ancestor.

I'm not a descendant but the Pennington family were local to my own ancestors in and around Mt. Vernon, Miller, Albatross, Phelps and Heaton(ville) in Lawrence County. My own 3rd G Grandfather was killed in an argument with a near neighbor Phillip Pennington (Asa's grandson I believe) who left the area afterwards and settled and died in Texas. Some say it was over a cow getting into the other's property but others say it was over the Civil War almost 20 years afterwards. Anyway, the Pennington's were near neighbors and a fairly large family group until the Civil War when quite a few moved on to Texas. Most of my ancestors were Union but two family lines fought on both sides.

Anyway, let me know if you find something interesting and I'll add it to Asa's memorial.

Asa Pennington
Hi Deena,

I've redone the memorial to better reflect the information that I consider the most likely correct. Fred G. Mieswinkel (now deceased) was one of the best Lawrence County Genealogists and Historians I'm aware of. I fully trusted his expertise. Another trusted genealogist and researcher is Ross Cameron but it's been quite some time (years) since I've connected with him.

The other information came from someone I'm not familiar with but felt the information should be included for anyone who wanted to pursue that direction. (Now moved to the bottom of the page.)

Your question...
I have a question about the parents of this Asa Pennington. In the 1st paragraph it says he is the son of Timothy Pennington & Susanna Nancy Riggs.
Then in paragraph 2, it says he was a son of Asa & Mary (Tyler) Pennington. Can you please tell me which is correct?

Thank you.

I'll definitely try to enhance it and see if we can't figure out what those other dates are. I think the birth year is 1878...I'm at work right now but I'll give it a more in depth look later tonight.
