Our personal philosophy is to consider all sources of information (such as family stories, family letters, family bibles, newspaper clippings, government documents, birth certificates, death certificates, marriage certificates, census records, city directories, etc.) keeping in mind that any type of record may contain errors, misspellings, contradictions, omissions and the like. Sometimes finding contradictory information leads to uncovering a lost family story or secret. Think about what events or circumstances might have caused this discrepancy. Just as in today's world, our ancestors' lives were often complicated and conflicting records may reflect that. As long as you cite your sources, your research helps everyone piece together their family history. Please don't be discouraged by those who complain about so-called "bad genealogy." Just be sure and document your sources for each fact. On the other hand, if you see someone's research that contradicts what you've found, we suggest that you don't just automatically reject it. Instead politely ask for their source of information and be willing to share your documentation with them. My partner and I have worked on our family genealogy for over 25 years and we've seen firsthand how the internet and digital resources have made genealogy research so much more accessible to everyone. Find A Grave is a wonderful resource for sharing genealogical research. We wish you well and good luck with your research!
