Bio and Links
Bio Photo As a student of my maternal grandmother, the family historian before anyone considered themselves such, I have listened to oral history of my ancestors for many generations.

Oral history about the lives of those who settled in the mountains of Virginia in the late 1700's, a place I still hold very dear to my heart. Oral history about my ancestors who fought in the War Between the States, losing children as babies or as young adults with "TB" and surviving during the Great Depression.

Oral history that as child left me wanting to know the little ones who were in heaven before they knew how good a warm tomato, fresh from the garden, on 'light bread' with mayonaise tasted as we kids had dinner at the picnic table with iced tea.

RE: Kingery Meador Cemetery
Kingery-Meador Family Cemetery

Locality: Roanoke County Temporal Period: 4th quarter 19th c. 20th c.
Realty Map: 106.00-2-74 Cultural Affiliation: Euro-American
USGS Map: Bent Mountain Landform: Ridge top
Grid Locus: L-9 Elevation: 1260 feet
UTM Easting: 588700 Aspect: Flat
UTM Northing: 4114840

Site Dimensions: 40 by 41 feet

Survey Description: Site consists of a small family cemetery with 17 graves. Identified graves included one inscribed obelisk, three metal markers, 11 with uninscribed fieldstones, and two unmarked graves identified on the basis of ground surface depressions. Cemetery contains two sections. Thirteen graves have been enclosed by a post and wire mesh fence that measures 40 by 44 feet. The other five graves are enclosed by a deteriorated post and wire mesh fence that measures 15 by 27 feet. All of the observed graves ranged in orientation from 102 to 118 degrees southeast. Historic plantings include yucca. Site was field inspected, photographed, and grave marker inscriptions were transcribed and compared to previous documentation. Site size was estimated by pacing the horizontal extent of the observed graves.

Survey Date: 12/98

Field Notes: _x_Yes ___No
Photographs: _x_Yes ___No

References: None

Additional Comments: Assigned temporal period was based on the 1895through 1979 range of death dates inscribed on observed headstones. However, the presence of uninscribed fieldstone markers and unmarked graves may reflect an earlier or later use of the site. The cemetery is not marked on the USGS Bent Mountain map sheet or on local realty maps.

Marker Inscriptions:

Octavia Meador Ballard M. Kingery illegible metal marker
1885 1966 1899 1979
(metal marker adjacent to (metal marker)
uninscribed granite block)

Wrong Photo
The photo you have for Ruby Anne Oliver Marshall is incorrect. That is a picture of her aunt, Ruby Burton Oliver. Ruby Anne has not yet died. Please take the photo off the page. I have a better picture of Ruby Burton Oliver's stone on her page. I also have to clear up other information on the page. Not sure how the wrong information was added since I did the whole cemetery at one time but we will get it straight. I cannot take your picture off.

Maxine Johnson Powers
Hi Kathie,

I was wondering if you would consider turning Maxine Johnson Powers over to me ? She is not related but was a dear sweet friend ... My memorial number is 46999742 ... If not , that's ok , most people only turn them over to family members .. If you don't turn it over to me , would you please add some things for me ? Her full name is Maxine Garland Abbie Johnson & she was born March 19, 1934 in Augusta County, Virginia

She passed away February 24,2017 in Jetersville, Amelia County, Virginia

Also , could you please connect her to her husband,Earl Knight Powers ? His memorial number is 39977089 in the church cemetery as she is...
Thank you in advance for whichever you will do ...
Have a blessed day,
Brinda
