Bio

I was born and raised in Chambersburg, PA. Although I live in Harrisburg, PA., I often go to the historical society and cemeteries in Chambersburg, to do research and photograph headstones/markers of my ancestors. Genealogy has become my hobby since retiring from teaching Spanish in a Harrisburg area school district.

I have established that John D. Nitterhouse is the progenitor of the Nitterhouse family. He arrived in America in 1771 and was Daniel Niederhaus at the time of his arrival. I am also a descendant of other early settlers of Franklin County, PA. My ancestors include Frederick Karper (first Karper/Carper in Franklin County), Johann Theobald "Dewald" Kieffer who founded Upper Strasburg and Martin Wenger. Martin was the first Wenger in Franklin County. He is buried in Chamberbsurg, PA and not at the Wenger Meeting House in Jonestown, PA. Many descendants still use the Wenger spelling while others use variations such as Wingert.
Please do not hesitate to contact me, especially if we share ancestors.

INVITATIONS TO FELLOW MEMBERS:
On May 31, 2020, after visiting my parents' grave at Parklawns Memorial Gardens in Chambersburg, I drove the short distance to Norland Cemetery to look for a grave in section G. I did not find it, but I noticed a small marker for Bennie J. Simpson (1921-2002). I decided to photograph it and check if he was on findagrave. He was not, so I added a memorial and wrote a bio based on a newspaper article about his life and death. He left his Missouri home at age 9 and lived as a transient for 71 years, spending the last four years of his life in Franklin County, PA. I would love for my fellow findagrave.com contributors to visit the Bennie James Simpson memorial and leave a flower. Thank you. As of Oct. 20, 2022, the memorial is maintained by Bennie's great -niece. I am thrilled that she found his page and reached out to me!

My sister, Constance Louise Nitterhouse Jagow, died of a brain tumor in 1982. Flowers on her memorial will be appreciated.

My great uncle, Corp Charles Mentzer NItterhouse, was the first soldier from Chambersburg, PA to be killed in action in World War I. He had turned 19 just two weeks before. There is also a cenotaph for him, Cpl Charles Mentzer Nitterhouse. Please honor him with a flower on one or both memorials. Thank you.

On 19 Sept 2021, my beautiful Bengal, AdoraBelle Nitterhouse, had to be put down. She was aged 22 years, 6 months and 7 days. I have created a memorial for her, which you are welcome to visit. Please feel free to leave a flower on this memorial. She was not a shelter cat, so I ask that if you believe in getting a pet only from a shelter or taking in astray, please keep those thoughts to yourself to respectfully honor my informed decision, the bond between AdoraBelle & me and the joy she brought to me, my parents & others who encountered her. If you feel compelled to let me know that you disagree with getting pets from breeders, contact me directly. A memorial is not the place to air opinions nor grievances. Thank you.
