I am in the process of checking Woodland Cemetery burial records -vs- memorials and markers for the correct spelling of name, birth date and place, death date and place in preparation of a possible book publication of burials for the cemetery. Also, many obituaries, census info and death certificates are available online for this task.

Note:
1. Anyone creating a memorial as buried in Woodland Cemetery should be sure the burial has taken place in Woodland. My volunteer project of making memorials started from using the Woodland Cemetery burial records.

2. Find A Grave is a grave registration site - (not a genealogy site) - and the memorials I have made for Woodland Cemetery are a volunteer project or "work in progress" from walking the cemetery, obituaries, death certificates, many sources of records and from the actual Woodland burial record.

3. Regarding a correct spelling and correct dates, one cannot always rely on the spelling of a name and/or date for making a memorial as correct info because errors have been found in obituaries or death certificates plus the marker. One must make the memorial as info found with a note of correction added in the bio.

4. A memorial transfer request - Are you a direct descendant? Might need to check the rules first.

5. Edits - If no proof is sent with an edit and I cannot verify, it may be declined.

I have been a longtime volunteer for Woodland Cemetery researching for missing burials that may be in Woodland before 1920 plus any new burial added to the cemetery records to compile a new complete record book.
Note: The State of Michigan did not require cemeteries to keep record of burials until 1920.

Short cemetery history:
Woodland Cemetery dates back to it's beginning in 1824 when it was then Grove Cemetery. (Grove Cemetery began in 1810 but no burial records have been found). Some old obituaries have the burial to be in Woodlawn Cemetery. The name was changed from Grove to "Woodland" in 1843 and Woodland Cemetery Association was organized July 3 1868 when Woodland trustees purchased the property from the Grove Cemetery trustees.
In 1879, 15 families formed the Woodland Vault Assoc. purchasing two lots for the erection of a mausoleum which stands empty today. It was used for a period of time in the winter months because the frost was too deep for digging. There are records for the mausoleum (chapel usage from 1879 to 1897).
For years, Woodland Cemetery was managed by the Board of Trustees and the lot owners as the Woodland Cemetery Association.
In 1991, since there was a lack of lot owner interest by not attending meetings, the board was forced to make changes. The Board voted to manage the daily operations and did so until age and health forced another change - sell the cemetery.
In 2002, the search for a buyer was accomplished by the Cemetery Board and the cemetery was sold to the City of Monroe.
