I have been searching for and keeping my family history since 1965 when a great-aunt sent me a copy of the Huffman family history. She had been keeping the family records most of her life. Actually I put the pages she sent me into a box for safe keeping and didn't look at it again for 10 years. I always knew where they were but was too busy raising my children to do anything with them.
It was the late 70s when I started to fill in the blank branches of our tree that my lack of interest had caused. At that time the only way I could get information, before computers, was to go to the court houses and dig through piles of dusty papers hoping to find a new fact or just a clue leading me to the next dig site. I didn't live where my ancestors were born or died so that meant lots of road trips. I also wrote many letters to older relatives and asked a lot of questions about their parents. Lots of paper work, note books and file boxes.
Now I am one of the older generation and I would love to answer questions about my ancestors but not many are asking. They depend on the vast amount of information they can obtain via computers, as do I.
When I found Find A Grave and I found several of my ancestors, I knew that I had found a real treasure.
