Greetings!

I have been a volunteer with Find-A-Grave (FG) for many years, having adopted local area cemeteries to insure that all headstone information has been accurately entered into FG as well as the geographic coordinates and photos. I do this for two reasons: (1) so that families are spared the frustration of walking all over a massive cemetery to find where their loved ones are buried; and (2) so that genealogical researchers have a reliable record of what is actually ENGRAVED IN STONE for a specific person in a particular cemetery location.

NORMALLY, THE INFORMATION OBTAINED DIRECTLY FROM THE HEADSTONE SHOULD BE ENTERED INTO THE PRIMARY DATA FIELDS. Without proof (such as a headstone photo or cemetery record or death certificate) of burial, you shouldn't be creating a memorial in the first place.

What if the person's names and dates are not correct? There are two options: we can correct these mistakes with an entry in the biography section or explain the reason for corrections in the section labeled as "Gravesite Details." The biography section is also a great place to add information from an obituary or other family sources.

FG recommends that additional genealogical information about the deceased be placed in the biography section along with the name/ID of the information provider.
