M. Todd Cathey was raised in Dickson County, Tennessee. He has been a student of the American Civil War for over thirty years. Growing up in Middle Tennessee, his interest in the Civil War was developed at an early age when learning of several ancestors who were private soldiers in the 11th Tennessee Infantry. His primary area of interest is the common soldier in the Western Theater, including research on the 11th and 49th Tennessee Infantry Regiments. He is the editor or author of several books focusing on the Confederate Army of Tennessee. Cathey holds several advanced degrees, including two doctorates.
