I grew up in Munster, IN and now live in Houston, TX. My paternal great grandparents were born in Holland. They immigrated in the mid 1800's to the area south of Lake Michigan where the land was swampy and like that of their homeland. They were farmers and were familiar with digging canals to make the land workable. They were some of the first settlers to the Munster area. My maternal grandparents were from Germany immigrating during the late 1700's and mid 1800's. Some were farmers who settled in the Hobart, IN area, while the other half settled in Necedah, WS. They were horse traders, accountants and machinists.
I love searching for family on Find a Grave and get so excited when I find someone and even more excited if there is a picture and obituary.
