Bio

My late father Bruce Tillinghast was a member of the Society of Mayflower Descendants. One branch of our family tree goes back ten generations to John Alden (1598-1687) who was an American colonial figure and one of the charter members of the Plymouth Colony. John Alden came to America on the first voyage of the Mayflower in 1620 when he was about twenty-one years old. He was my dad's 7th great grandfather.

Our family lineage also dates back to the
Rev Pardon Tillinghast, Jr. (1622-1718) who was the son of Pardon and Sarah (Browne) Tillinghast. He was born in Seven Cliffe, Beachey Head, Streat (now Eastborne), Sussex, England.

Rev. Tillinghast emigrated to Providence, Rhode Island in 1643 and officiated as pastor of the First Baptist Church in Providence, Rhode Island for over 60 years.

In 1671 he erected, at his own expense, and presented to the church its first meeting house. He was "a man of considerable means for those days but for labors to the colony and during his long pastorate he refused all compensation for his services."

He was also a merchant and a cooper. He built the first wharf in Providence, Rhode Island. Many of his descendants have been among the most illustrious men of New England.
