Bio

I am the 4th child of 4 and 4th daughter of Arthur Charles 'Bud' Mangelsdorf and Doris Irene Baber. My paternal grandfather is Friedrich Wilhelm Mangelsdorf married to Blanche Eola Scammel. My paternal great grandfather is Ernst August Mangelsdorf. My family came from Germany and settled in Atchison Kansas for 3 generations; having the Mangelsdorf Bros Seed Company and greenhouse. My great grandfathers home, which was known in the family as 'Homewood' was bequeathed to the retired Sisters of Mount Saint Scholastica. My grandfather hand planted the Iris that line the original entrance drive at Jackson Park in Atchison from the entrance all the way to the top at Guerrier Hill, of which a postcard was made back in the day of Guerrier Hill with my grandfathers German Iris in the right lower corner. My grandfather was Mayor of Atchison Kansas. His love of Iris was given to my father , Arthur Charles 'Bud' Mangelsdorf who instilled in me the love of iris and at last count and 2-3 years of not being able to divide my Iris I have approximately 50-60 different colors/kinds of Iris with a plant count of over 5,000. I love dividing my Iris and sharing with any who inquire as I hate to have these or any living plants die. My dream goal before I grow too old, is to contact JacksonPark & the City of Atchison to see if I could be allowed to replant by hand the original roads that my grandfather planted in Iris from the Iris in my yard as a memorial tribute to my grandfather and the Mangelsdorf family. This would totally be of my time and my cost but I would like to ask Jackson Park and the City of Atchison if they could assist in putting a sign marker exposing the Iris in honor of my grandfather and the Mangelsdorf family from Atchison Kansas. My paternal family is made up of Mangelsdorf - Scammel - Mothersaid. I haven't looked into my maternal family history. My maternal grandparents were Herbert Abraham Baber who married Oda Alice Hopkins and lived in the Holt-Kearney-Lathrop Missouri area. I am a 23 year 7 month+ survivor of a 1993 diagnosis of Terminal Stage IV malignant (hereditary tumor) jugulare glomus (carotid body tumor; Paraganglioma) tumor given 2 years to live. My Iris along with the rest of my flowers herbs Faerie gardens and vegetable gardens are my continued therapy for my cancer survival along with my total loss total house fire of 2010 where my family and I lost everything we owned and treasured where I raised my two sons where we lived for 25+ years; all i was left with were the scrubs on my back. Therefore but by the Grace of God go I.
