Bio
As a young man, I had heard many family stories and how people were related. While visiting Congressman Steve Neal's office in Washington DC, several of his staff asked me if I was related to Sheriff Sam Patterson from Surry county...I wasn't sure, and decided that I should find out. (3rd cousin twice removed I think!)
At The pharmacy where I worked, several of us were talking at the lunch counter, and for some reason the Civil War was brought up( early '70's) Dwight Moore started laughing and said that his grandmother "Ludie" told him that her daddy didn't give a s... about the Civil War...thought Congress should have settled the matter! Dwight also said that his great "uncle Harry" was the only family member that fought for the CSA as far as he knew.
"Ludie" turned out to be Saluda Patterson Hill, my gr gr grandfather's sister. "uncle Harry" was William Henry Harrison Patterson, their brother and all were children of William C Patterson and Caroline Patterson.
I was hooked!
