Raised in Western Colorado, upon my move to East Tennessee in 2004, I was told the story of my great-grand father's origins in the county just north of us and how his relatives had searched (unsuccessfully) for many years to know more their history in Tennessee, but all birth records from both counties of my great-grand parents had been lost when courthouse records were burned by fires around the turn of the 20th Century. The only clue we had was a transcript of birth dates from an old family Bible. With over 5000 graves in Claiborne County with the same surnames we had no idea where to start.
Eight years later, R.D.Herring posted headstones to a cemetary he had photographed in TN. How excited I was when after having given up on ever finding her, I sat down at the computer and FOUND my grandmother's gravesite (under her maiden name) - all due to information on Find A Grave.

Thank you so much to all the volunteers who take these pictures and make information such as this possible for those like me who have been searching for so long. We couldn't do it without you! If any of my extended research into the Monroe/Hurst/Evans families of East TN can be of assistance to anyone else searching for the truths of lives lived in the past, I so want to be of service and share the joy of discovery and remembrance.
