Presidential Cabinet Secretary. Born in New York City, New York, he was a United States Navy submariner in the Pacific during World War II. After the war, he became one of New York's most prominent labor leaders. He fought his way to the top of the painters' union and then was president of the Building and Construction Trades Council of Greater New York. As a friendly leader of the labor movement for cultivation, he was in charge of developing a strategy to win union support for Nixon in the 1972 Presidential election. In 1973, President Richard Nixon, appointed him the 13th United States Secretary of Labor. Serving until 1975, he also was in President Gerald Ford's administration. After leaving office, Brennan returned to his union position and retired in 1992.
