British Prime Minister. Born the 3rd Duke of Grafton, he was educated at Peterhouse and Cambridge. Entering English politics, he was elected MP for both Boroughbridge and Bury St Edmunds in 1756, Secretary of State in 1765 and First Lord of the Treasury, in 1766. Acknowledged as an effective leader, Parliament elected him Prime Minister of Britain, serving (1768-70). After leaving office as Prime Minister, he devoted much time to theological study and writing. He also was a prominent figure in the period of the American Revolutionary War. He died on his Suffolk estate at age 75.
