Presidential Cabinet Secretary. He graduated from Williams College in 1885, attended Columbia Law School, was admitted to the bar in 1888 and established a law firm in Cleveland, Ohio. He served as a member of the Ohio State Senate, (1896-99), was an influential adviser to President Theodore Roosevelt as a member of the U.S. Civil Service Commission and served as Commissioner of Corporations at the Department of Commerce and Labor, (1902-03). In 1907, President Theodore Roosevelt appointed him as the 23rd United States Secretary of the Interior, where he advocated for the conservation of natural resources serving until 1909. After leaving office, he returned to his law practice. He died at age 84 and was the last surviving member of President Theodore Roosevelt’s administration.
