A 21-year-old soldier with the Fort Lewis-based Stryker Brigade has been killed in Iraq.

Pvt. Cory R. Depew died Tuesday in Mosul when his Stryker vehicle was struck by a rocket-propelled grenade, the Department of Defense said Thursday in a news release.

News of Depew’s death came the same day Fort Lewis held a memorial service for Sgt. Jeremy R. Wright, 31. The Green Beret was killed Jan. 3 during a patrol when his vehicle struck a roadside bomb near Asadabad, Afghanistan.

Depew, of Beech Grove, Ind., joined the Army on Dec. 30, 2003. He was assigned to B Company, 2nd Squadron, 14th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade, 25th Infantry Division (Stryker Brigade Combat Team) at Fort Lewis, south of Tacoma.

He arrived at Fort Lewis in May and left for Iraq in November on a yearlong deployment. As a cavalry scout, he provided reconnaissance and surveillance while stationed in Mosul, said Tammy Reed, a Fort Lewis spokeswoman.

At least 44 soldiers from Fort Lewis have died in Iraq and Afghanistan since October 2001, with 39 killed in Iraq since the war began in 2003, including six killed last month in a suicide-bomb attack at a mess tent in Mosul.
