Major League Baseball Player. For six seasons (1957 to 1962), he was a pitcher with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Houston Colt .45s and Los Angeles Angels. After attending Banning High School in Wilmington, California, he was signed as an amateur free agent by the Brooklyn Dodgers. Following service with the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War, he was acquired by the Pirates in 1954. He marked his Major League debut with Pittsburgh as a late year call-up on September 21st, 1957. The following season (1958), he yielded a career-high 9 victories with a 1.61 ERA in 18 games pitched for which included 15 as a starter. Witt experienced a world championship with the Pirates in 1960 and appeared in 3 games without allowing a run against the New York Yankees during the 1960 World Series. In 66 regular season games, he compiled an 11 win 16 loss record with a 4.32 lifetime ERA in 229 innings pitched. After retiring from baseball, Witt attended Long Beach State University and earned a Masters Degree in Physical Fitness Instruction from the University of California. He went onto become a Biology and Health teacher in addition to coaching baseball and tennis.
