Although a life long resident of Macon, Georgia Terry is buried in his wife's hometown of Hawkinsville. (Orange Hill Cemetery) He was the son of Carl and Ella Bell Jackson, was survived by his wife, Cheryl, a son born after his death, Terry Jr., a brother, Donnie, sisters Pat, Carol, and Mary Ellen. Terry played football for Willingham High School in Macon.

He had an aptitude for languages. He trained in linguistics and spoke Vietnamese fluently. Part of his job in Vietnam to serve as an interpreter for the military and civilians.

Although Lance Corporal Terry Jackson was assigned to the Headquarters and Service Company of the 3rd Battalion, 9th Marines, he was in the field with Kilo Company when he and Cpl Mark L. Kline of Cumberland, Maryland, were killed in action. LCpl Jackson was awarded the Silver Star for the actions which led to his death.
