Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He enlisted in the 1st Delaware Volunteer Infantry Regiment in March 1861 and was commissioned Captain of Company B. As a Lieutenant Colonel in the 4th Delaware Volunteer Infantry Regiment, he participated in the battles of Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg. In October 1864, he was promoted Colonel of the 6th Regiment U.S. Veteran Volunteer Infantry and for his war service was brevetted Brigadier General of U.S. Volunteers on March 13, 1865.
