Civil War Union Army Officer. A pre-War officer in the Kentucky State Militia, he served during the Civil War as Colonel and commander of the 20th Kentucky (Union) Volunteer Infantry, which he helped recruit in the Lexington, Ketuncky environs. In February he was made the commander the 22nd Brigade of the 4th Division of the Army of the Ohio, which he led during the April 1862 Battle of Shiloh. In that battle the brigade held the center of his division's position, where it fought all day in the Peach Orchard area (even enacting a charge), and was one of the few Federal unit's to not be moved out of it's position. He then led the brigade through the October 1862 Corinth Campaign, then was named first as the military commander of the Bowling Green, Kentucky area, then as Provost Martial of Lexington, Kentucky. He continued to serve in the Union Army until ill health from his field servce forced his resignation on June 24, 1864. After the warhe became a prominant breeder of race horses, and wrote extensively on the subject.
