World War I Victoria Cross Recipient. A native of Scotland, he received the award from British King George V on March 3, 1917 at Buckingham Palace in London, England for his actions as a private in the 1/4th Battalion, The Royal Scots Fusiliers, 52nd Division, of the British Army on August 13, 1915 at Cape Helles, Turkey during the Gallipoli Campaign of World War I. Born in Airdrie, Lanarkshire, Scotland, he worked as a carter while training with the 1/4th Royal Scot Fusiliers in his spare time. After the outbreak of World War I in July 1914, he was called to active duty and sent to Gallipoli, Turkey in the spring of 1915. He saw action at Achi Baba Nullah in July of that year before being wounded the following month, for which he won the Victoria Cross for gallantry. He was sent back to his home in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland and discharged from the British Army due to the nature of his injury and worked at a munitions factory. Following the outbreak of World War II, he worked nights as a telephone switchboard operator and part time as an air raid warden during the day. He died in Glasgow at the age of 78. His Victoria Cross citation reads: "On 13 August 1915 at Cape Helles, Gallipoli, Turkey, Private Lauder was with a bombing party retaking a sap when he threw a bomb which failed to clear the parapet and fell amongst the bombing party. There was no time to smother the bomb and Private Lauder at once put his foot on it, thereby localizing the explosion. His foot was blown off, but the remainder of the party escaped unhurt." In addition to the Victoria Cross, he received the Serbian Medal for Bravery, the 1919-15 Star, the British War Medal (1914-20), the Victory Medal (1914-19). His medals are retained in a private collection.
