World War I Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Dumbarton, Scotland, he served as a Lance Corporal in the 1/9th Battalion, Highland Light Infantry, British Army. During the Battle of Passchendaele at the Ypres, Belgium, on September 26, 1917, front line British troops were have difficulty being supplied with small arm ammunition, due to intense German artillery fire. When the supply had reached a seriously low level, Lance Corporal Hamilton on his own initiative, carried bandoliers of ammunition through the enemy's fire to his comrades. In full view of snipers and machine guns, he went out several times to the front line at close range and distributed the ammunition. For gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was promoted Sergeant and awarded the Victoria Cross on November 26, 1917. After the war, he remained active in the Army Reserves and served as a Colonel in charge of an Italian prisoner of war camp in England, during World War II. He died at age 76 in East Kilbride, Scotland.
