Cincinnati Mayor. A member of the Republican Party, he served as the Mayor of Cincinnati, Ohio from 1967 until 1971. born one of ten siblings, he served with the United States Marine Corps during World War II and upon his return home, he attended the University of Cincinnati. He played collegiate football during his collegiate years and was a member of the Bearcats' squad which captured the Sun Bowl title in 1946. He attained his law degree from Harvard Law School and went onto become a partner of a Cincinnati-area law firm. He initiated his political career as a member of the city council in 1959. During his tenure as mayor, his administration played a key role in the development of the city's downtown area. In addition, his initiative for the construction of the Riverfront Stadium led to the inviting of a professional football franchise, the Cincinnati Bengals in 1968. The venue was also the home of the Cincinnati Reds during the years of the "Big Red Machine". Ruehlmann gained national attention with his efforts to quell race riots for which took place in Cincinnati and other major US cities in 1967. The result was the establishment of Human Relations Committee for which provided a direct link from the citizens to the mayor's office. After leaving office, he remained active in politics by serving as chairman of the Hamilton Country Republican Party Central Committee.
