Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. After graduating from the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York in 1854, he was assigned frontier duty until the outbreak of the Civil War. During the war, he was a captain of cavalry through the Manassas campaign. In the winter of 1861-62, he organized the 5th regiment of Iowa Volunteer Cavalry, of which he was made Colonel. He participated in the Tennessee campaign and was engaged in the capture of Fort Donelson. He commanded that fort until March of 1863. During the last two years of the war, he commanded a brigade or division of cavalry in Middle Tennessee, northern Alabama, and Georgia, and was the chief mustering and disbursing officer for Kansas, Nebraska, Dakota, and Colorado. He was brevetted Colonel and Brigadier General for services rendered during the war. After the war, he was a Major in the Regular Army and left the military service in 1869.
