Journalist. Born in Lebanon, Samir Kassir began his journalistic career at the age of 17, and from 1981 to 2000 he was a regular contributor to the French international political review Le Monde Diplomatique. After he earned his PhD in 1990, he became a professor at the Institut des sciences politiques de l'Université Saint-Joseph in Beirut. He was also the editor of Lebanese newspaper Al-Nahr, where he wrote a regular column in which he vigorously opposed the Syrian occupation of Lebanon. Kassir was assassinated by a car bomb in Beirut on June 2, 2005. It is widely believed that his anti-Syrian stance led to his death.
