Chief Red Cloud was a leader who never wavered in defense of the Lakota people. He was proud of a picture of him and former President Bill Clinton that he displayed in his living room. He was proud of his work at the United Nations on behalf of Lakota people.

Oglala Sioux Tribe President Bryan Brewer issued the following statement late Friday:

Chief Oliver Red Cloud began his journey to the spirit world on July 4, 2013. As President of the Oglala Sioux Tribe and on behalf of our Oyate, we are deeply saddened by the loss of our Traditional Chief Oliver Red Cloud.

Chief Red Cloud served as Itancan of the Great Sioux Nation and the Black Hills Sioux Nation Treaty Council. Under his leadership, he advocated for the Treaty Councils and Tribal Council to work together on behalf of the Oyate.

On a personal note, I am really saddened by his loss. His death has galvanized our efforts to continue to fight for our treaty rights. Chief Red Cloud served as a bridge between the Treaty Councils, the Tribal Council, and the President's Office. He shared his knowledge and wisdom with me and provided me with emotional support and guidance in trying times as our nation strives to improve the life of our people. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Red Cloud family as they mourn the loss of this great man.
Chief Red Cloud was born 93 years ago at the Pine Ridge Agency which is, at the crow flies, approximately 75 miles southeast of the Black Hill of the Great Sioux Reservation and 150 miles northeast of the Fort Laramie treaty signing location.
Chief Red Cloud was the Pine Ridge Agency delegate to and also Chief of Eight Indian Reservations when convened. He was the leading statesman for keeping Peace between Lakota, Cheyenne and Arapaho people of the Dakota Territory with the United States according to the terms under the Fort Laramie Treaty.
He was known to be a powerful orator about obligations each nation had to the other in keeping peace during modern times. As Chief of Eight Reservations, Chief Red Cloud continually reminded the United States Government that it still shall provide education, health and welfare to his people.
Wake services will be held at Pine Ridge High School Gym on Thursday, July 11 and Friday, July 12. Funeral services will be on Saturday, July 13.
Chief Oliver Red Cloud is survived by all his relations. Mitauye Oyasin – We are all related.
