World War II Soviet Union Military Figure. A highly-decorated officer, she was a prominent member of the Soviet's 588th Night Bomber Women Regiment known as the "Night Witches". She received the honor of Hero of Soviet Union. Born in Shabanovka (now Dolgoye), her father worked as a railwayman, she was raised in Ukraine. She had aspirations of becoming a pilot at an early age and by her mid teens, she had acquired experience including flying solo and parachute jumping. The horrific event of watching her brother being killed by the Nazi's prompted her to volunteer as a bomber pilot. During the course of the war, she flew more than 800 missions and endured being shot down. Among her other honors include the Soviet Medal of Honor, the Order of Friendship, the Order of Lenin and three-times the Order of the Red Banner as she attained the rank of lieutenant colonel. During the post war years, she raised her family and became a flying instructor.
