Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. In 1849, he emigrated to America with his three brothers and settled in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. In May 1861, he with brothers, Frederick and Herman enlisted in the Missouri Volunteers. He with Frederick were commissioned officers in the 5th Missouri Volunteers and brother Herman served as a Sergeant in the 1st Missouri Volunteer Engineer Regiment. Charles followed his brother Frederick as Colonel in command of the 9th Wisconsin Volunteers and for his war service was brevetted Brigadier General of U.S. Volunteers on March 13, 1865. He was mustered out of service December 3, 1865 and later relocated in Salt Lake City, Utah. His brother Edward was the Governor of Wisconsin from 1861 to 1864 and Frederick was brevetted Major General on March 16, 1865. In 1927, the citizens of Manitowoc, Wisconsin erected a monument on the lawn of the Manitowoc County Courthouse in honor of the four Salomon brothers for their service in the Civil War.
