War of 1812 Brigadier General, US Congressman. A lawyer and politician who served in the Massachusetts legislature from 1807 to 1809, he fought in the War of 1812, being appointed Brigadier General on April 15, 1814. He was brevetted Major General on July 25, 1814, and received a Congressional Gold Medal for his services. Serveding in the Army until 1820, he moved to Lousiana, becoming a prominent lawyer and planter. He was elected to represent Louisiana's 2nd District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1835 until his death in office in 1839.
