Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Beginning his Civil War service as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 21st Ohio Volunteer Infantry, he was promoted to Captain in the 111th Ohio Volunteer Infantry before being assigned as the Provost Marshal on the staff of Brigadier General Henry M. Judah. He then was promoted to Colonel and commander of the 1st Unuted States Colored Heavy Artillery. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "faithful and meritorious services during the war".
