US Marine, WWII, 2nd. Marine Division in the Pacific ~ Charlie had been a graduate of Kalamazoo Central High School and General Motors Institute. He was a resident of the Village of Richland, MI. He had been the son of the late Charles McKinley VanWoert (SMN, WWI) and Eva Melvina (Smith) VanWoert. Charlie enjoyed traveling; golf, reading the newspaper in his Florida room, grilling, watching TV, drinking wine, going to church with his wife, woodworking, and spending time with his family. He maintained a picture perfect yard in the quite little town where he had lived. On a warm sunny day he'd go sit outside on his patio, listen to the birds sing, and enjoy a brew or glass of wine. He was just a regular guy. He retired from Wilson Brinker and Association in 1987. He was survived by his wife, Patricia Lila (Nicolls) VanWoert, of Richland; his two daughters, Marilyn Ann Sossomon [Harvey] of MI, Linda Sue Greer of Kalamazoo, and his son Steven Bishop VanWoert of NM. He was also survived by his grandchildren: Scott and Jeff through Marilyn, Jennifer, Lisa Doremus (1971-2011), and Meghan, through Linda, and Cassidy Louise (VanWoert) Denhof and Dr. Nickolas Lee Button, DDS [step-grandson] through Steve. Charlie was cremated in accordance with his personal wishes and beliefs. He does not have a memorial marker at Fort Custer National Cemetery. For him, this is is being used as a virtual cemetery. This is where he belongs... May he rest in peace.
