US Congressman, US Marine Corps General. He was regarded by many as being one of the most significant individuals to hail from Guam. A member of the Republican Party, he served Guam in the United States House of Representatives from 1985 to 1993. His military experience began at the age of thirteen, when he contributed to local war efforts while the Japanese occupation of Guam took place during World War II. He received a scholarship to attend the University of Notre Dame and later attained his Master of Arts degree from George Washington University. Blaz enlisted with the United States Marine Corps Reserves and attended Officer Candidate School, prior to his being commissioned second lieutenant. Among his combat tours are Okinawa and Vietnam. His numerous decorations include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Medal with Combat "V", the Navy Commendation Medal and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry. Blaz attained the rank of brigadier general in 1977, thus becoming the first figure from Guam to received that rank in the United States Marine Corps. He retired from the military in 1980. During his tenure in Congress, Blas served as a member of the Armed Services, Resources and Foreign Affairs Committee. He focused efforts on a strong national defense policy and was committed to furthering Guam's political system.
