Author. He was known as 'the poet of Catholicism' and wrote several volumes of poetry, including his most well-known "The Hound of Heaven." He has also produced some literary theory and criticism and works of prose, as well as a number of essays, including a study of Shelley. Other works include "New Poems" and "Sister Songs," both published after his death. Due to a short story he wrote in 1889 called “Finis Coronat Opus,” (End Crowning Work) his violent childhood, and his secret affair with a prostitute, Thompson is one of the many people suspected of being Jack the Ripper, responsible for the terrible murders in 1888 of at least five prostitutes in London's East End. He died at forty-eight from some combination of tuberculosis and laudanum poisoning.
