U.S. Congressman. Living in Detroit, Michigan, he was employed as a telegraph operator and also taught telegraphy (1884-89). Moving to Chicago, Illinois, he became successful in the retail tobacco business. Entering politics, he was elected as a Democrat to the Sixtieth Congress and to the next three succeeding Congresses, serving 1904-14. He was again elected to the Sixty-fourth Congress, serving 1915-17. Declining to be a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed his former business pursuits until his death.
