Colorado Territorial Governor. An 1836 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, he served in the United States Army as a Major during the Mexican War. He was appointed by President Abraham Lincoln as the 1st Governor of the Colorado Territory, serving from 1861 to 1862. He later unsuccessfully ran for the office of Colorado Territorial Delegate to the United States Congress. In 1894 he was run over by a horse and carriage while walking the streets of Denver, and died as the result of his injuries. Gilpin County in Colorado was named in his honor. His older brother was Henry Dilworth Gilpin, United States Attorney General from 1840 to 1841.
