Army Spc. Carlock was assigned to the 416th Transportation Company, 260th Quartermaster Battalion (Petroleum Support), Hunter Army Airfield, Georgia. Carlock was shot when his (fuel truck) convoy was ambushed northwest of Baghdad and he died en route to the hospital. His main duty in Iraq was driving tankers that carried fuel for military vehicles around Baghdad. Ryan quit school his junior year at a Texas high school but he returned in later years to Colchester High School to graduate in 1999. He joined the service about three years ago to earn a living and get job training. Ryan was gung ho about the military and intended to stay with it but he planned to join the U.S. Air Force and remain stateside. It was a given that he would serve in the military as he comes from a long line of service men and women. Ryan is survived by his wife, Heather, and their daughter. He also has a 7-year-old daughter from a previous marriage.
