Long Career of Community Service Noted During Life of W. G. Danekas
Funeral services for William G. (Bill) Danekas, 75, a long-time resident of the Ritzville area who had spent hundreds of hours in helping to make the community a better place to live, were held Saturday at the Zion Congregational church.
Danekas died Thursday at the Adams County Memorial hospital of cancer. He had undergone major surgery in January and had been at his home at 105 West Tenth until he returned to the hospital June 28.
Although Danekas was busy farming at the ranch just south of the city now farmed by his son, Ray, until he retired four years ago, he always was interested in community welfare.
He devoted many years to public service and much more time to small community tasks for which little recognition is given.
He had been a member of the draft board which serves Adams county for many years, and he recently received a presidential citation after retiring from the board.
He also was on the board of directors of the Adams County Memorial hospital and was a former member of the Ritzville district school board.
His other duties included being a director and past officer of the Interstate Production Credit association and director and past secretary of the Ritzville Warehouse company.
He was a charter member of the Ritzville Lions club and a member of Elks lodge No. 228 in Spokane, the Adams County Historical society, the Ritzville Gun club, and Ritzville High School Alumni association and the Ritzville chamber of commerce.
Danekas was born on Sept. 19, 1885, to Mr. and Mrs. Jergen Danekas at Minonk, Ill. He came to this area when he was three years old and had farmed until four years ago, when he moved into Ritzville.
He was a member of Ritzville's first graduating class in 1905. He was married to Emily Koch in Ritzville on Oct. 14, 1908.
Funeral services were held at the Zion church where he had been a member for many years. Interment was at Ritzville Memorial cemetery. Rev. R. W. Rieger officiated at both services.
Pallbearers were Lawrence Thiel, Fred Langenheder, Albert Wolsborn, Daniel Kembel, Carl Heinemann and Robert Newland.
Survivors besides his wife at the home, are two sons, Raymond and Donald, both of Ritzville; two daughters, Mrs. Margaret Healy of Pullman and Mrs. Doris Vandermark of Las Vegas, Nev.; a sister, Mrs. Tena Sielaff of Ritzville; and 10 grandchildren.
