Nebraska Governor. Immigrating to Omaha, Nebraska in 1856, he established a distinguished business career in construction and ranching. Entering politics, he was a member of the Nebraska House of Representatives, in 1866, served as a delegate to the State Constitutional Conventions (1871, 75), president of the Omaha City Council in 1880 and Mayor of Omaha (1881-83, 85-87). In 1891, he was elected as the state’s first Democrat and the 7th Nebraska Governor, serving until 1893. During his term, railroad regulations were promoted and the Newberry railroad act was vetoed. After leaving office, he resumed his former business interests until his death.
