Professional golfer. Born in Leatherhead, England, he was a prominent PGA Tour golfer of the 1920s and 1930s. His first pro win at age 19 in 1923, the Galveston Open, was followed by wins at the Los Angeles Open (1926), Pebble Beach Open (1927), Salt Lake Open (1930), Canadian Open (1932), and Florida West Coast Open (1936). His best year was 1937, winning the first Vardon Trophy, Los Angeles Open, Canadian Open, and True Temper Open. He retired with 36 PGA Tour wins and was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1992. After competitive golf, he became a well-regarded instructor, teaching at Metropolis Country Club and then Westchester Country Club into his 90s.
