Born in 58 B.C. to a powerful and ancient Claudian family, and later married to Cesar Octavian. She was the first woman in Roman history to be actively and influentially involved in all major decisions during her husband's 45-year reign. She was extraordinarily wealthy, and managed her property and assets carefully. Her husband elevated her above all others when he placed statues of her around the city. Her grace, charm and wit served him well in diplomatic affairs. She was considered the model of feminine decorum, a true Mater Patriae. She was a patroness of Art and Architecture. She designed her house on the Pallatine Hill, the Villa of Prima Porta. Octavian built and dedicated a beautiful garden complex to her, the Porticus Liviae. She was mother to Tiberius, grandmother to Caligula and Claudius, and great-grandmother to Nero. After Octavian (Augustus) passed away, she became a priestess in his newly-founded cult and took the name, "Julia Augusta." She continued to participate in political and religious affairs until her death in 29 A.D. at the age of 86.
