Vermont Governor. After serving in the United States Army in Europe (1946 to 1948), he received a degree in government and economics from Harvard University, moved to Vermont and founded Shelburne Industries. He served in the Vermont House of Representatives from 1959 to 1961, and was Chairman of the Chittenden County Republican Party from 1963 to 1966. In 1964 he was the unsuccessful Republican nominee for Lieutenant Governor, and he was the party's unsuccessful nominee for Governor in 1966. In 1972 he returned to the Vermont House, served two terms, 1973 to 1977, and was Majority Leader in his final term. In 1976 he was elected Governor and served four two-year terms, 1977 to 1985. He ran unsuccessfully for the United States Senate in 1986, but in 1990 was returned to the Governor's office. Snelling died of a heart attack just seven months after his 1991 inauguration, and was succeeded by Lieutenant Governor Howard Dean. The Richard A. Snelling Center for Government, a policy institute and leadership training facility, was established in his memory.
