U.S. Congressman. Graduating from Dartmouth College New Hampshire, in 1795, he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1801 and commenced to practice law in Colchester, Vermont. He was Sheriff of Chittenden County, (1808-09) chief justice of the Chittenden County Court, (1811-14) and a member of the Vermont State House of Representatives, (1812-17). In 1817, he was elected as a Republican to the Fifteenth Congress, serving until he resigned being appointed United States Marshal for the district of Vermont and served (1818-22). He was then appointed America's first Minister Plenipotentiary to Chile, serving (1823-27). Returning to America, he was president of the United States Bank at Burlington, Vermont, (1830-36). He then resumed the practice of Law until death at age 73.
