US Congressman. After attending public schools he worked as a school teacher until relocating to New Hampshire in 1774. He served as a sergeant during the Revolutionary War, seeing action at Lexington and Concord. Settling in Vermont in 1789, he entered politics after working several years as town clerk. He was elected to the Vermont House of Representatives in 1785, and continued in that capacity for almost twenty years. He was a delegate to the state constitutional convention in 1791 and again in 1814, a member of the Governor's Council for seven years and served in the militia. In 1803, he won a seat as a Federalist candidate to Congress and in 1809. Leaving Congress in 1811 he served as the Lieutenant Governor until 1815.
