Sports Figure. Roller Derby Queen and longstanding icon of the American sport since the late 1940s. She began skating about 1947 and was the villain who relished boos from the crowd. Reached her zenith in the 1960s as a star of San Francisco's famed Bay City Bombers. With purple, green and polka-dot hair, tattoos and a flair for elbow-throwing, the Meanest Mama on Skates endured 12 broken noses and numerous cracked ribs and was still skating in exhibitons in her early 70s. Her long career, spanning seven decades, was documented in a 2001 film about her life, "Demon of the Derby."
