He was the son of Josiah G. and Caroline (Livermore) Abbott; lawyer;

On May 24, 1861 he became Capt., Co. A, 2nd Massachusetts Infantry Rgt. in Shenandoah Valley; On Aug. 9, 1862 he was killed at Cedar Mountain, Va. the brought home and buried in Lowell Cemetery; March 13, 1865 brevet maj., volunteers.

He was the brother of Henry Livermore Abbott and Fletcher Morton Abbott who both served in the Civil War.
